Our Malt

Exploring new varieties through local flavor.

Malt is arguably, the most important raw ingredient in beer production. It provides flavor, aroma, color and the sugars to make fermentation possible. Malted grain has been steeped, germinated and kilned to generate an enzymatic process which transforms starch into fermentable sugars. The most commonly used grain for malt production is barley, but other grains, such as rye, wheat and oat are also utilized.

From working directly with local, Willamette Valley, farmers to source specialty varietals of barley for harvest, we are able to play a vital part in the growing process. Tiller Malt then collaborates with local craft brewers and distillers to give them an edge up on their competition, by using locally sourced and traditionally processed specialty malt.
